Thermoflex roof heat reduction paint

Thermoflex is a water-based, single-component paint that provides waterproofing and thermal insulation for roofs and facades. It is based on white acrylic resin with a high content of ceramic microbeads suspended in water. The white coating effectively reflects solar radiation, reducing roof heating, while the addition of ceramic microbeads allows the coating to absorb heat, reducing its penetration into the interior.

Thermoflex has excellent washability and durability in outdoor conditions. It is suitable for use on new and old masonry substrates - concrete and cement. It works well on flat and sloping roofs, as well as facades.

Properties:

  • reflects up to 81% of heat from solar radiation
  • protects the roof from heat, reduces the surface temperature to 35°C
  • reduces the temperature inside by absorbing heat from the roof
  • remains highly flexible even at low temperatures
  • protects the surface from damage caused by temperature fluctuations
  • guarantees durable protection for a long time
  • allows you to mask unevenness
  • can be used as a reflective layer under solar panels
  • For use on all types of roofs and walls (with a suitable primer)
  • SRI = 101 - solar radiation reflection index
  • SR = 81% - energy reflection index

SR and SRI coefficients for Thermoflex

The terms "solar reflectance index" (SRI) and "solar reflectance" (SR) refer to the interaction of surfaces with solar energy, but measure different aspects:

  1. Solar Reflectance Index - SR

    • Reflectance is a measure of the proportion of solar radiation (energy from the sun) that is reflected by a surface rather than absorbed. It is usually expressed as a percentage and indicates how much solar energy is reflected by the surface.
    • Reflectance is often used when discussing the properties of roofing materials, coatings, and other surface finishes, indicating how much sunlight they can reflect.
  2. Solar Reflectance Index - SRI

    • SRI is a more comprehensive measure that takes into account not only reflectance but also the emissivity of the material. Emissivity is the ability of a material to release absorbed heat.
    • SRI is calculated based on solar reflectance and thermal emissivity values to determine how hot a surface will become when exposed to sunlight compared to standard black (with a reflectance of 0 and an emissivity of 0.90) and standard white (with a reflectance of 1 and an emissivity of 0.90) under the same conditions.
    • SRI values typically range from 0 to 100, with higher values indicating materials that remain cooler in the sun by reflecting solar radiation and effectively emitting thermal radiation.

In summary, while reflectance is a simple measure of how much solar energy is reflected by a surface, SRI provides a more holistic view of how a surface will behave in terms of heat gain from solar exposure, combining reflectance and emissivity into a single index.

Heat reflection - How does it work?

  • Infrared radiation is responsible for heat absorption. To reduce roof heating, we create a Thermoflex coating on the roof that reflects this radiation.
  • Thermoflex reduces building heating through two mechanisms:
    • reflection of infrared rays (main factor)
    • thermal insulation
  • Reflection of sunlight: The white coating means that infrared radiation is hardly absorbed at all (approx. 70% of infrared waves are reflected, the remaining 30% are absorbed). In the case of Thermoflex, ceramic microbeads are added to the white pigment, which increases the infrared light reflection coefficient (approx. 81% of infrared waves are reflected, the remaining approx. 19% are absorbed). For comparison, a black roof absorbs up to 100% of infrared light. Nothing is reflected.
  • Thermal insulation: The addition of ceramic microbeads to Thermoflex means that, in addition to its excellent reflective properties, we also obtain a layer of thermal insulation. Ceramics have very good insulating properties. An interesting fact is that ceramics have been used in space shuttles, among other things, due to their insulating properties.

Systems

The table below shows which system should be used depending on the substrate.

Substrate System type System Cost
Bituminous roofs** Thermal protection 0.30 kg/m² Elastodeck
+ 0.25 kg/m² Thermoflex
from PLN 24.50 net per m2
Sealing + thermal protection from 1.5 kg/m2 Elastodeck*
+ 0.25 kg/m2 Thermoflex
from PLN 74.50 net per m2
Steel roofs Thermal protection 0.25 kg/m2 Elastometal
+ 0.25 kg/m2 Thermoflex
from PLN 24.00 net per m2
Anti-corrosion + thermal protection 0.6 kg/m2 Elastometal
+ 0.25 kg/m2 Thermoflex
from PLN 41.00 net per m2
Anti-corrosion + sealing + thermal protection from 1.3 kg/m² Elastometal
+ 0.25 kg/m² Thermoflex
from PLN 74.50 net per m2
EPDM Thermal protection 0.3 kg/m2 Elastodeck diluted with 5% water
+ 0.3 kg/m2 Thermoflex
from PLN 27.00 net per m2
Painted walls, non-chalking non-chalking 1-2 x 0.3 kg/m2 Thermoflex from PLN 14.50 net per m2

* To calculate the cost of the system, we use:
1.25 kg of Elastodeck in RAL 7008
+ 0.30 kg of Elastodeck White
+ 0.25 kg of Thermoflex

** Bituminous substrates must be seasoned for at least 1 year before applying the system. For additional sealing and/or improved adhesion to roofing felt, a primer coat of Elastodeck is recommended. For small projects (up to 100 m²), Thermoflex can be applied directly to the roofing felt, but the durability of the system with Elastodeck is better. We recommend application on roofs with a 3% slope to reduce water accumulation.
